HISTORY

The Consulate-General of the Republic of Türkiye in Sydney was founded on 1 November 1969 following the establishment of diplomatic relations between Türkiye and Australia in 1967 and has been functioning at its current office building since then.

The office building, which was built in 1912 in an area the history of which dates back to the early twentieth century, is labeled by the Woollahra Council as part of the cultural heritage of Sydney.

In 1977 a Commercial Office and a Social Affairs Office and in 1994 an Educational Office was founded to function under the auspices of this Consulate-General due to the need arising from the developing Turkish-Australian relations in various fields as well as the increasing number of Turkish citizens in Sydney and throughout our area of jurisdiction.

The Consulate-General of the Republic of Türkiye in Sydney was the target of a cruel attack perpetrated by the ASALA terrorist organization, which committed assassinations against Turkish diplomats and attacks against Turkish missions and interests throughout the world between early 1970s and mid1980s. The late Consul-General Şarık Arıyak and his security officer the late Engin Sever were murdered by Armenian terrorists in Sydney on 17 December 1980.
